Christmas Without the Cost

Hampton Roads Holiday Adventures

Looking for some Christmas fun this holiday season without breaking the bank? Skate past those expensive trips and long drives and stay home in Hampton Roads! Here in the Seven Cities there are plenty of places to enjoy classic holiday activities like ice skating, light displays, and Christmas Towns!

From November 18 until January 15, just outside of MacArthur Center Mall in Norfolk, the area is transformed into an outdoor skating rink! Now in its 13th year at the MacArthur Center, the rink is open for daily skating as well as birthday parties and special events. The rink even offers private lessons to those just learning in addition to having skate guards on site to lend a helping hand if you’re a little rusty. There’s even a Kiddie Rink for the little ones to test out their skills!  Not to mention the awesome specials that also take place throughout the season including:

  • Magic Snowfall (Mondays-Saturdays: 6pm, 7:30pm and 8:30pm; Sundays: 6pm and 7pm)
  • DJ Saturdays
  • Student Skate Nights ($2 off admission with valid high school or college ID)
  • Date Night Skate Night (two tickets to skate and two hot chocolates for $25 on Wednesdays)
  • Skating Santa
  • Disco on Ice
  • Paint the Ice

Admission is only $7! (The Center also offers skate rentals on-site if you don’t have your own).

Another favorite spot for the locals is Liberty’s Ice Pavilion at Colonial Williamsburg, open from November 17 to February 19. The Pavilion offers tasty seasonal snacks and holiday music as well as the occasional live performance by local choirs and music ensembles. Admission is only $12 for adults and $10 for kids!

If you’re looking for something a little bit more festive, there’s even more options to pick from! Whether you’re looking to light up the night or walk through a winter wonderland, we’re sure to have something for everyone.

Hosted by the Norfolk Botanical Garden, the Dominion Energy Garden of Lights is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year! Running from December 1 until the 31st, the display is active 5:30pm-10pm every night. A two-mile drive through a garden full of millions of lights, the displays bring the four seasons to life. There are also plenty of holiday treats from Merrygold & Honey such as hot cocoa, pretzels, kettle corn and more! Only $25 mon-thurs, $30 on fridays, and discounts are offered to military and city of norfolk employees!

The Garden of Lights was voted #8 best light displays in the country through USA Today/10 Best contest in 2014! It was also named “One of the 12 Magical Christmas Destinations You Need to Add to Your Holiday Bucket List” by Simplemost.com. Other destinations included on the list are Disney World, Vienna Austria, and the North Pole, making this a shining jewel in Virginia’s crown.

The Annual “Holiday Lights Merry Mile” is up and running at Virginia Beach’s Boardwalk! Running from November 23 until December 31, the display is a little smaller than previous years but still holds the same amount of holiday cheer! Spanning 14 blocks, see over 50 of the most popular light displays from years past at this year's Merry Mile. Visitors can view the light displays by driving along a special designated route along the boardwalk. There are animated light displays along on either side of the boardwalk, with some arching over the boardwalk path. Entry is only $5 on weekends, dropping to $4 on weekdays and $2 on Military Mondays

Dickens’ Christmas Towne by Nauticus is back with a even bigger, brighter, and better activities and entertainment.  Their newest addition for kids, “London Docks”, features a 120-foot long maze made entirely out of shipping pallets!  Another addition, Once Upon A Time, is an interactive space, which showcases the Talking Book and Bookworm. Nauticus will also be bringing back old favorites, including an elaborate indoor train display, Geoffrey “the talking Christmas Tree,” the Pickwick Puppet Theater, Father Christmas, amazing jugglers, magicians, and performers. There’s plenty more all new free activities, games, and crafts, so there’s sure to be something for everyone!

Starting November 24, and continuing until January 1, Busch Gardens opens their Christmas Town in Williamsburg! Featuring the biggest Christmas light display in North America with over 8 million lights as well as thrilling rides and delicious dining, and it’s bound to be non-stop fun Christmas Town for kids and adults.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has joined Christmas Town this year at Rudolph’s Winter Wonderland in Holiday Hills! Guests get the opportunity to relive everyone’s favorite TV special through a series of photo opportunities while waiting to have their pictures taken with the reindeer and other characters! Also for the first time, Sesame Street Forest of Fun has been decked for the holidays. Kids get the opportunity to meet their favorite characters from the show and capture a special holiday photo. Of course, there’s Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole, where little ones can sit on Santa’s lap and pose for a classic photo that’ll be sure to embarrass them for many Christmases to come lol.

However you and your loved ones chose to celebrate the season, we at TitleQuest wish you happy holidays! Eat, drink, and be merry with all your family and friends!
